The Edward Roberts House

This Classical Revival "eyebrow" house is probably the best-known example of this uniquely Key West architectural design. It was designed and built by Edward Roberts, a ships' carpenter from Ireland. It has a full two-story plan with the roof extending down over the second floor windows onto classic porch columns, affording less of a view but the very desirable shade that is accomplished by awnings in contemporary homes. This particular design is seen nowhere else in the United States. There are about forty of these lovely houses remaining on the island of various sizes and states of restoration. It is a good example of elegance of design in modest dwellings so typical in Key West.
