The Southernmost House |
|
Although a block from the southernmost tip of the continental United States, this house acquired this name when it was, in fact, the southernmost house. It is the finest example of Queen Anne style architecture on the island. The name applies to the Victorian style houses built during the latter two decades of the nineteenth century, when decorative imagination went to extremes. This is a relatively "quiet" example, except for the colors. ( Most houses in Key West were and still are white with dark shutters.) Although the general perception is that Key West houses are Victorian, there are only a few true Victorian houses on the island. Key West houses are mostly classical revival or vernacular in design with an abundance of Victorian era decoration, often referred to as gingerbread. |
