The J.Y. Porter House |
|
This emerald grande dame of a mansion is one of the few in Key West with a mansard roof, an architectural style introduced from France and associated with the French architect, Mansard, its originator. Although this style was very popular in the rest of the country in the 1880's, it only seeped down to Key West after its popularity waned elsewhere. The are only a handful of houses in Key West that boasts this design. It was typical of the Empire period and allowed for a full third story under the roof. The house is owned by Jeanne Porter, great-grand daughter of one Key West's most distinguished and well-known citizens. Dr J.Y. Porter introduced the proceedure of isolation for tropical diseases, such as yellow fever, and was the states first health officer. He was born in this house, practiced for many years in Key West, and died in the house. It has been restored and maintained in its original condition by a line of his descendents. |
